Pillow Use: the Behaviour of Cervical Pain, Sleep Quality and Pillow Comfort in Side Sleepers

A random allocation single blind block design pillow field study was undertaken to investigate the behaviour of cervico-thoracic spine pain in relation to pillow use. They recorded Sleep Better with Derila quality and pillow comfort ratings, frequency of retiring and waking cervical pain and duration of waking cervical pain while sleeping for a week on their usual pillow, polyester, foam, feather and rubber pillows of regular shape and a foam contour pillow. Analysis was undertaken comparing sleep quality, pillow comfort, waking and temporal cervical pain reports, between the usual pillow and the trial pillows, between pillows of differing content and foam pillows of differing shape. This study provides evidence to support recommendation of rubber pillows in the management of waking cervical pain, and to improve sleep comfort aid quality and pillow comfort. The rubber pillow performed better than subjects' own pillow in most instances. Subjects' own pillow performed similarly to foam and polyester pillows, and there is no evidence that the use of a foam contour pillow has advantages over the regular shaped pillows. Feather pillows should not be recommended.

GADGET So all of this was made for you? DALE Yeah, and I get to name everything, too! Neat, huh? GADGET Really! What's this flower called? She picks a buttercup and holds it up. She smells the flower, then drops it into the brook. It floats briefly; then the Serpent rises beneath it. Dale and Gadget sit Wake Up Refreshed with Derila in surprise; but the Serpent only smiles and bows, first to Dale and then to Gadget, while speaking. SERPENT Hello there, sssir, madam. Here the Serpent pauses and gestures expectantly at Dale. Dale is caught off guard. The Serpent nods and is about to speak to Gadget again; but instead he pauses and regards Dale askance. SERPENT How about "Sssserpent?" It ssssounds better. DALE Sure, okay. "Serpent." The Serpent nods, then turns to Gadget again, clearing his throat. Sssssserpent, at your ssserviccce. He picks the buttercup off the top of his head and offers it to Gadget. GADGET Thanks, Mister Serpent.

DALE Hey, stop that! You want flowers, Gadget? I mean, Eve? I'll get you flowers. He casts about for some blooms. The Serpent points offscreen. SERPENT There'sss a beautiful bunch of blosssomsss over there. DALE Really? Thanks. Dale heads offscreen. The Serpent immediately moves closer to Gadget and puts an arm round her shoulders. SERPENT My dear, it'ss a lovely day. Are you enjoying yoursself? GADGET (all innocence) I sure am! This place is so beautiful. SERPENT It sssure isss. GADGET I sure would. The Serpent brings his grape (with two bites out of it) from behind his back. He hands it to Gadget with a smile. SERPENT There. Isssn't it lovely? Adam said I'm not supposed to touch this. SERPENT Iss that sso? Tell me, why not? The Serpent's eyes are brilliant and penetrating. Gadget's eyelids droop and her pupils spin. GADGET Gosh, I sure feel sleepy. SERPENT Why don't you lie down and resst.

That'ss right. Gadget falls asleep. The grape rolls from her lap onto the grass. Dale comes back onscreen with a bunch of LILIES. DALE Here, Gadget, I mean Eve. Oh no! (as he drops the lilies and picks up the grape) A grape! The swaying Serpent closes his eyes and shakes his head solemnly. SERPENT I'm afraid we both have. Oh, woe iss me! It weighss heavy inssside me. DALE Oh gosh! What'll we do? Help! Help! Monterey the Angel steps immediately from the side of the screen. MONTEREY Alright, what's the problem `ere? What's goin' on? DALE Oh, gosh, Mister Angel, Gadget and the Serpent ate a grape! Look! He holds out the grape (which has two bites out of it). Monterey looks at the sleeping Gadget and the smiling Serpent. His brow clouds thunderously, and his eyes blaze; he doubles in size. 2!! (makes mark on clipboard so hard his pencil breaks) Now they must pay the Ultimate Penalty: expulsion from the Garden!
